Bright side of being visually impaired

“The greatest disability is in your mind,” says uMfolozi’s level 3Transport and Logistics student, a former world renowned kick boxing champion.  Ronald Dlamini is one of the visually impaired students with the most positive attitude studying at Esikhawini Campus.

He lost his eye sight as his career in kick boxing was at an all-time high. He had won several boxing matches and boasts the following titles: Kick boxing KZN Champion, the first black fighter to win a match against Johan van Stardon in 2009, the Shrinken Mix Marshal Arts World Title in New Zeeland and the Last man standing title which he won at Suncoast Casino towards the end of 2011.

Describing how his life changed he said, “I felt a bit stiff and had a pounding headache. They told me I had meningitis. One of the nurses gave me an overdose which travelled straight to my brain completely destroyed my eye sight and landed me in a comma. I lost a lot of weight and went insane, when I gained consciousness but made sure I prayed a lot. I had been assisting the Sharks with their training but when they had to play their match I was lying helplessly in hospital and did not even know who was responsible for the damage.”

“I still had a lot that I wanted to pursue, after this incident I moved home with my mom who took good care of me. There were many people who encouraged me to look beyond the circumstances. After a while I was in contact with the KZN Blind Society; I couldn’t write my name nor read.  People in class were demotivated and I found myself being the one to restore their faith and there after focused on rebuilding myself.  I continued to do everything I used to do before losing my sight.”

“Up until today I still train and do almost everything that I used to do. When God takes something away from you, he replaces it. I can match my clothes, train people in boxing and I wrote my first book Light after Blind in December last year which is available at local bookshops.”

“My life was crowded as a boxing champion but now it’s quiet and I can think clearly and decide what I want to do with my life. I now look at the bright side of being blind; when I meet someone what matters the most is their inner being,” explained   Dlamini who plans to start his own gym that would accommodate everyone including those with disabilities.

His Transport and Logistics lecturer, Sandile Zondi described Dlamini as a hard worker and a disciplined fighter who is very optimistic. “Teaching him is very interesting, the fact that he carries a recording devise every time he comes to class encourages me to be prepared at all times. He is participative and when he doesn't understand any concept he stops me immediately and ask for more clarity, he may be visually impaired but he will tell you exactly where to find concepts in the book and he can even refer you to specific pages,” reiterated Zondi.
