Welcome to Umfolozi TVET College

A successful career in Hospitality after studying at uMfolozi

Hlengiwe Mzimela is one of the former uMfolozi TVET College students that have a good story to tell. Mzimela Studied Hospitality at Esikhawini Campus and now boasts the position of Marketing Plan Co-ordinator at the Mtubatuba based Protea Hotel.

One of Mzimela’s fondest memories about the College was when she went to the exam with the hope to write a sanitation exam, only to find that she was expected to write Human Nutrition. Nutrition was however, her favourite subject but she was ready to give up as she wasn’t prepared. “Mrs Thuli Mngoma forced me to write the exam. I was just not ready to fail but she took me to her office, calmed me down and encouraged me that I could get top results. To my surprise, I got 90%,”explained Mzimela who also received an award for the same subject at this year’s Top Students Awards.

The 28 year-old who hails from Mtunzini says her career began as a receptionist at Protea Hotel in Empangeni. She went on to say,“It wasn’t much but I was following my passion and enjoying being part of the industry which is all that mattered to me and most of all I was happy. After 6 months I was asked to start training in stocks which led to a promotion and with time I was blessed with an opportunity to be in the Marketing Department at Protea Hotel uMfolozi River.”

When asked about the impact Hospitality studies have on her current appointment at the hotel she said, “Hospitality Studies cover a broad range of skills, the courses teach you a lot not only about making money and running a business but also about maturity and self-discipline. The industry is all about generosity, patience and putting other people before yourself, which requires one to be of a certain character and behave in a certain manner around people of different races and cultures. My job is all about building and maintaining relationships with guests so the courses play much of an impact in my daily duties.”

Mzimela’s advice to students, “ You must always be willing to start from the bottom and work your way up in that way everything makes more sense as you move up and it becomes easier to deal with day to day issues. There is no elevator to success; you have to take the stairs. Whatever challenge you face in the industry, always remind yourself why you chose it in the first place.
