   f5

In order to prepare students that are exiting the College for the outside world and the workplace, Chief albert Luthuli Campus Student Support services held an Exit workshop on, 28 November 2018.

Among the guest speakers were officials from the South African Police Services – Crime Intelligence Unit, the Department of Labour, Mandeni Municipality and the College.  Ms Magagula, English lecturer addressed students on their dress code and behaviour in the workplace.  She said that the way a person dress represents the type of person that they are. “Make sure your clothes fit, are comfortable and professional.  Gents make sure your shirts are tucked in and ladies avoid crop tops, revealing clothes that may distract other workers,” she said.  She added that behaviour is also very important as it shows where you come from. “Respect your colleagues, be polite, kind and show up on time for work.”  She stressed that students should also avoid office romance and gossiping about colleagues.

Ms Mngoma, Work Placement Officer guided students on how to fill in application forms such as the Z83, how to write a CV and how to prepare for an interview.  She encouraged students to broaden their horizons and not be afraid to take advantage of opportunities that come up in other provinces.

Mr Mngadi from the SAPS Crime Intelligence highlighted some of the issues that can break a student’s career before it even takes off, such as having a criminal record, he advised against petty crimes such as shoplifting and added that students should keep their records squeaky clean especially those in finance as most employers are now checking criminal records before they appoint.

Department of Labour representative, Mr Ntshangase encouraged students to register on the work seekers database and to always make sure their information is updated.

Ms Zondo from Mandeni Municipality highlighted the importance of confidentiality and that students should communicate with their superiors in a respectful manner.

Student Representative Council Chairperson thanked the College for giving students the much-needed information on where to go from here now that they have completed their studies.  He encouraged fellow students to learn, learn and never stop learning.
