The Work Based Experience Office (WBE) recently hosted the INSETA Induction and Work Readiness Workshop at Esikhawini Campus for students who have recently been placed with various industry partners for Work Integrated Learning (WIL).
The five-day workshop is the first of its kind for uMfolozi TVET College, where the SETA not only sponsored the student’s stipends, but also made sure that they were well-equipped with the necessary information before joining the workplace.
Ms Angel Ngwenya, Work Placement Officer and Mrs Phindile Nsibande, Assistant Director: Partnerships and Innovation, engaged students on topics such as dress code, attendance, behaviour, attitude, and confidentiality in the workplace. Mrs Nsibande emphasized the importance of good behaviour in the workplace, “As uMfolozi College we value the relationships that we have with our industry stakeholders, therefore it’s crucial that you help us nurture and sustain these relationships in the way that you behave, don’t spoil it for students that will come after you.”
During her address, Ms Ngwenya reminded students to respect everyone regardless of their position. “The end goal is to see you securing permanent employment, make your employer see the need to keep you even after your internship has ended. Always maintain a positive attitude no matter what and don’t forget why you are there,” she said.
Speaking to the Marketing and Communications team Thamsanqa Yaka, a Business Management student expressed his excitement about the great opportunity he has been given. He is currently doing his WIL with Umfuyi Business Services. His current duties include applying for tenders, doing company registrations, taxation and auditing. “I am learning a lot, and the stipend I am receiving helps as I am now able to support my family financially.”
