


Meet Khona Mabhida, a former student from Esikhawini Campus where he completed his Report 191 Hospitality and Catering Services diploma. Upon graduating, Khona embarked on an exciting journey with Mein Schiff Cruises. The Marketing team had the pleasure of chatting with him to delve into his inspiring story.
Q: Who is Khona Mabhida?
A: I’m Khona Nicholas Mabhida, a 27-year-old from Zwelibomvu in Pinetown, raised by my mother, umaNgcobo.
Q: Where did you go to school?
A: I attended Olwambeni Primary School and Zwelinjani Secondary School, both in Zwelibomvu.
Q: When did you join uMfolozi College, what did you study, and why did you choose uMfolozi College?
A: I joined uMfolozi College in 2018 to pursue my National Diploma in Hospitality and Catering Services. My brother recommended uMfolozi College, assuring me it was a great choice as he was based in Richards Bay at the time.
Q: What did you do after completing your studies?
A: I faced some challenges initially. I worked part-time at Checkers as a packer, then as an Education Assistant at Wili Wili Primary School for two months. I eventually got an interview at Tsebo Solutions Group and was hired as a Chef.
Q: How did you end up working for Mein Schiff Cruises?
A: I applied through Crew Life At A Sea, a cruise ship agency in Cape Town. They guided me through the entire process. I didn’t have to pay them; they arranged my interviews with Mein Schiff Cruises, and the company covered all travel expenses. I chose to go abroad to enhance my culinary skills and gain international exposure.
Q: What are you currently doing at Mein Schiff Cruises?
A: I work as a Demi Chef de Partie on the night shift at the Tag n Nacht (Day and Night) restaurant.
Q: How are you finding it?
A: It’s challenging, but I take it day by day, focusing on my duties and staying disciplined. Life onboard has its ups and downs, but you need to stay strong and take it easy.
Q: How do you unwind in your spare time?
A: I usually rest in my cabin, enjoy quality sleep, and chat with my family. Occasionally, I go ashore with friends to explore new places.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: I want to learn more about food and different cuisines and improve my management skills. My dream is to open my own restaurant one day.
Q: What do you miss about South Africa?
A: I miss home, my family, and my kids every day.
Q: What advice would you give young people who want to follow in your footsteps?
A: Believe in your journey and don’t be intimidated. The hospitality industry is vast with unlimited opportunities. You need to be passionate and disciplined from the start.
Q: Tell me about someone who has influenced your career.
A: My Senior Lecturer, Mrs. Mngoma, has been a major influence. She shares my passion for food and has motivated me greatly with her achievements.
Q: What role did the College play in your success?
A: I wasn’t expecting such high-quality education and professionalism from our classes, practicals, and exams. I’m proud to say I apply everything I learned at uMfolozi TVET College in my daily work.
Q: Would you recommend studying at a TVET College and why?
A: Absolutely. uMfolozi College offers top-notch education, and you never feel lost in the workplace. You can use your Qualification anywhere in the world.
Q: What advice would you give to current hospitality students?
A: It’s up to us to grow and improve the hospitality industry. Inspire the next generation with your hard work and success. Don’t just do it; do it with love, as if you were cooking your favorite meal. Remember, the world awaits you. All the best, Culinary Wizards.
