Chief Albert Luthuli Campus recently hosted an NSFAS Indaba, a focused student engagement event where “all things NSFAS took centre stage at the campus hall. The purpose of the Indaba was to give students clarity and information directly from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) about funding, allowances, accommodation and other NSFAS related matters that affect them.
Campus Manager, Mr Sanjith Hooblal reminded students to stay focused on their studies and to familiarise themselves with the rules of NSFAS funding. Former student and engineering company director, Mr Albert Mkhwanazi encouraged students to focus on their studies and avoid strikes, highlighting their impact on both the institution’s and students’ reputations. He shared his own success story, now employing over 70 people, as proof that a TVET College certificate can open endless opportunities.
Senior Bursary Officer, Mr Mthokozisi Zulu outlined the respective responsibilities of the College and students regarding NSFAS, while also clarifying the role of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). He explained that cases where a student has passed all modules but reflects a rejected status instead of provisionally approved fall under the mandate of DHET and NSFAS.
He emphasised that tuition fees are paid directly to institutions and not to students. With regards to accommodation, he clarified that private accommodation may only be utilised when campus residences are full or where no residence exists. Only students living 10km or more from campus, qualify for accommodation. Once a student has been placed in private accommodation, it cannot be changed, except during the August review period.
Mr Zulu further urged students to submit all required documents, provide accurate information to avoid rejection and ensure they are deregistered from their previous institution when changing colleges. He concluded by encouraging students to complete their studies within the prescribed time to ensure continuous NSFAS funding.
