For Amahle Gumede being a student at uMfolozi TVET College, entails a lot more than just textbooks. Currently studying Electrical Infrastructure Construction, Amahle picked uMfolozi because of its reputation for solid, hands-on training and its great links to industry. The College’s focus on helping students find work placement and grow as individuals, makes it the perfect fit.
Amahle recently headed to Cape Town for an incredible experience at the Mandela-Sobukwe Leadership Camp on Robben Island. After the campus SRC chairperson suggested it, Amahle did some research and loved the idea of learning how to be a better leader and a better person. Even though the trip was a total whirlwind with the late flights and early departures meant there wasn’t much time for sightseeing. Amahle still fell in love with the place. The camp was packed with lessons the staff and fellow students made it feel like a really welcoming environment.
The biggest lesson Amahle brought home from the island wasn’t about electricity, but everything connected to the heart. “I learnt that I have to trust and stand up for what I believe in and have confidence in what I think is right,” Amahle explained. “It’s not just a nice thought; it’s a rule to live by, especially when it comes to being honest with yourself and your work,” she added.
Even when things don’t go exactly as planned, Amahle stays positive, living by the motto: “Rejection is redirection”. With a solid background in electrical construction and a fresh boost of confidence, Amahle is showing that being a “better person” is the best way to become a great professional.
