In celebration of TVET Month, we interviewed a former Richtek Campus student who is now employed by Bell Equipment as a Turner Machinist.
Mangaliso Khumalo’s journey is one of resilience, determination and the transformative power of education. As a single mother working as a house helper, she experienced first hand, the challenges of not having a formal qualification. Determined to create a better future for herself and her child, she decided to take a bold step towards changing her circumstances.
In 2019, Khumalo enrolled at the College although she initially wanted to study Electrical Engineering, she ultimately pursued Mechanical Engineering, specialising in Fitting and Turning. “The trade chose me because when I got to Campus the Electrical Engineering class was full with the only available alternative being NC(V) Mechanical Engineering. I was completely blank about the field and wondered whether I would even pass my modules.” Once given the opportunity to study, she was determined to make the most of it and completed her studies in record time.
With the support and mentorship of her lecturer, Mr Nyahwa, Khumalo developed the technical skills and confidence needed to pursue opportunities in the industry. Her journey continued through practical experience and volunteering, eventually leading to an apprenticeship at Bell Equipment in 2022.
Her hard work and commitment did not go unnoticed. In 2025, she was named Apprentice of the Year. In March 2026, she passed her trade test on her first attempt, officially becoming a qualified Turner Machinist.
Today, Khumalo proudly walks into the workshop as a qualified artisan, a testament to how education, perseverance and an unwavering belief in one’s dreams can transform lives. She encourages students to remain focused on their goals: “Your past absolutely doesn’t define your future. A positive attitude and deep respect go hand in hand with dedication. Never let go of your vision. Iphupho alifi umnikazi esaphila.”
Khumalo’s story is a powerful reminder that it is never too late to change your circumstances, pursue your dreams and build a better future through education and determination.
