For Seluleko Ngcobo, art is not just a hobby it’s a language that speaks, “where art meets the heart.” A graduate of uMfolozi TVET College (Maphumulo campus), the 23-year- old artist has spent over a decade perfecting his craft. Today, he is the driving force behind FONII ART, a creative company based in the Tshobho Area of Maphumulo.
Seluleko’s work is currently transforming local pre-schools through vibrant mural paintings. These aren’t just decorations; by painting children’s favourite cartoons on school walls, he’s actually motivating kids to attend class and to bring a splash of joy to the community. “Sketching and painting may be hard and the process is long,” Seluleko admits, “but seeing a smile from clients and eyes full of joy… that is the favourite part for me”.
His inspiration comes from a deep place of love. He describes art as a silent but loud part of his soul that he never wants to lose. While he looks up to international role models like Davison Design and Nigerian artist Chidindu Udeagha, Seluleko is equally motivated by the “new family” of like-minded creators he has met, who have taught him that learning is the key to growth.
As FONII ART grows, Seluleko has big plans to create jobs in his community. To get there, he’s looking to upgrade his toolkit with items like stencils, projectors and spray guns to make the work more efficient. He is currently eager to connect with schools and programs that can offer the guidance and support needed to take his business to the next level.
When it comes to advice for other young dreamers, Seluleko keeps it practical and focused, “Actions over captions.” He believes in keeping your head down, working on your system and making small, consistent moves. As he concludes, “Time waits for no man, you better do it now”.
